Oregon Inlet Fishing Center sits at the edge of the Herbet Bonner Bridge which crosses Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Island. The fishing center normally is home to a fleet of 50 off-shore and in-shore charter boats. The center is the largest fishing center of its kind on the east coast of the United States. Repairs are estimated to take approximately 3 weeks. In the meantime the Fishing Center continues to take reservations on-line and at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. Charters are taking place each day during the construction. If you have a charter call your captain for further information about departure location and times .. names and phone numbers are available at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center site

Michael Halminski - September 5, 2011
"We're cleaning up debris in the yard, and dealing witih getting some normalcy back into our lives but it may be a long time coming. Yesterday afternoon we went up to north Rodanthe to survey the impact. The S-Curve was destroyed and a new channel had been cut.
We were lucky to have survived this hurricane. The major damage came from water surging on the soundside of the island."

I have lost track of time since Irene struck and flooded our villages
more than six weeks ago.
There has been a lot of cleaning up, and that will continue in the
coming months and throughout the winter.
I've been preoccupied with multiple tasks while trying to document
life here, as I go. Of course, the inlet at Pea Island has had my
curiosity the entire time.
Later today the new bridge will be open to the public as will all the
villages on Hatteras Island.
On Saturday, I flew over the affected areas for the first time with my
favorite pilot, Dwight Burrus of Hatteras.
And here is some of what I saw.
The debris from the storm is being collected and brought to the Salvo Day-Use Area for disposal. The piles are bigger than most of the houses in town.

This afternoon, I managed to drive up to the new bridge to see some of
the first cars making it across. There was a little fanfare and some
media coverage, and the atmosphere was jubilant. I could hear people
in their cars cheering as they drove across the new link.
