Resort · Spa Conference Center
The Sanderling is located near Duck at the narrowest point on North Carolina's Outer Banks, offering guests miles of secluded ocean beach plus the natural wonders of Currituck Sound. The 12-acre private resort encompasses three inns with 88 luxury rooms and suites; a restaurant and bar housed in a restored 1899 coast guard lifesaving station; a fully equipped Health Club, and a dedicated Conference Center. All are within easy walking distance of each other, and all have been carefully designed to evoke the character of the grand seaside hotels of the turn of the century, and to preserve the fragile environment of the Outer Banks. |
The Main Inn opened in 1985, and this distinctive two-story building set the tone for all other construction to the present time. The beautiful Grand Gallery features glowing natural wood finishes, a relaxing sitting room with fireplace and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound, and the resort's reception area. The Main Inn houses individually-decorated guest rooms and suites with private porches facing the Atlantic Ocean or Currituck Sound. All units offer kitchenettes. The North Inn opened in 1988 and was completely renovated in 1994. All rooms in this building are equipped with wet bars, refrigerators, and coffee makers. In The South Inn, opened in 1994, every room has a refrigerator, wet bar, microwave, and an unobstructed ocean view from its private porch.

The Sanderling Restaurant and Bar is located in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and beautifully evokes the history of the Outer Banks. It operated as the Caffey's Inlet Coast Guard Station No. 5 until 1945. In addition to preserving a distinctive example of coastal architecture, the entire building is decorated with nautical antiques and original artifacts. The full-service restaurant, featured in the April 1995 issue of Gourmet Magazine, offers progressive Southern cuisine featuring fresh local seafood. |
A dedicated Conference Center is designed to provide state-of-the-art meeting facilities close to, but separate from the daily activity of the resort. It is accredited by the International Association of Conference Centers, and offers Complete Meeting Packages. A Board Room and two meeting rooms can be configured to host groups from 10 to 100 in size. Meeting rooms open into an oceanside deck offering groups the opportunity to have meals or other functions in a refreshing natural setting. An Executive Suite offers accommodations and private entertainment space including decks with magnificient views of both ocean and sound.

Also available are four hard surface tennis courts, an indoor whirlpool with views of the sound, fully equipped exercise rooms, private saunas and massage therapy, locker rooms and a gift shop offering signature sportswear and other resort products. The Health Club interfaces with a seasonal outdoor pool and sailing center with sailboats, windsurfers, and other watersport rentals. | |
Recreation
In addition to The Health Club and the beach and ocean, The Sanderling Inn offers a variety of recreational amenities for the enjoyment of guests throughout the year. Both indoor and outdoor facilities ensure that even in inclement weather you can enjoy recreation, exercise and relaxation.
The Health Club facility, and an outdoor Jacuzzi and Swim Spa operate year-round. Immediately adjacent to the Health Club are the private facilities of the Sanderling Swim and Racquet Club, generally open from Memorial Day to Labor Day or longer. The Club offers outdoor swimming, boat rental, tennis lessons, windsurfing lessons, ping pong and other activities in season.
All guests of The Sanderling enjoy guest privileges at the private Pine Island Racquet Club located a short drive north of the Inn Property. This outstanding facility features three air-conditioned indoor tennis courts; two HAR-TRU clay courts; racquetball and squash courts, and platform tennis. The 18-hole Currituck Club golf course is located nearby.
Guests wishing to bike, run, jog or walk may take advantage of the Audubon Trail, a two-and-a-half mile nature trail that winds through the 3,400-acre Pine Island Nature Preserve. Surfcasting is a popular sport with resort guests and fishing, boat tours, sailing, jet skiing, and windsurfing are usually available from April through November on Currituck Sound. Gulf Stream off shore charter fishing can be arranged.

Art Collection
The Sanderling houses one of the most extensive collections of fine wildlife art and sculpture in the country. The collection is highlighted by works by Grainger McKoy of Sumter, SC, including an intricate carving of 15 Sanderlings in Flight in the Grand Gallery, and two Brown Pelicans in the lobby of the South Inn. There are also five pieces by Trailer McQuilkin, an internationally known sculptor who creates wildflowers from copper wire, sheet cooper, metal primer and oil paints. The collection includes porcelain birds created by various artists for Royal Worcester and Great Franklin Porcelain; more than a dozen porcelains of waterfowl, gamebirds and songbirds by Gunther Granget; and a series of miniature, painted ceramic game fish by Ronald Van Ruykevett. Most of the rest of the collection consists of rare, early edition Audubon prints, and a four-volume portfolio of the complete works of the renowned wildfowl artist. |
