Betsy Glass
Biographical Sketch
Betsy Ore Glass has long ties to the Outer Banks. Growing up in Virginia Beach, her
family took annual vacations to the barrier islands when she was just a youngster. It was
on those visits to the beach where the emotional connection to the area developed. Years
later, she came back many times with her husband, Keith and their children, Elizabeth
and Marty for summers of fun. Betsy has family that lives there now and she makes the trip often
to visit and soak in the sights and sounds of the area she loves so much. The
Outer Banks is a resting place, a place of exploration and a place to dabble in art and
photography for Betsy. More importantly though, it is a place that she finds very spiritual
because of the natural beauty that is in abundance.
Over six years ago, Betsy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Although fully recovered
now and resuming her life, it was a time of reflection. Her thoughts and memories of the
Outer Banks, both as a child and as an adult were tucked away in her heart. She thought
that she would put pen to paper and this is how "Reflections by the Sea" came to be. It
started as a collection of thoughts that she wanted to give to her children that included
scripture as a roadmap for an upright, inspirational life. But Betsy added something
unique to her writing. She added her photography. Not being professionally trained, she
simply took photographs of things she liked and tried to capture her subject in the best
possible light. To see more about her photography go to betsyglass.com.
Betsy's
family encouraged her to share "Reflections by the Sea." After meeting with the Coastland Times, the Outer Banks newspaper began publishing "Reflections by
the Sea" as a weekly column. This begins the fifth year. The response has been
heartwarming. Emails and letters from people from all across the country have responded
to say how the column has touched them in some way. Betsy believes this gift of writing
and photography is God-given and feels led to use her life experiences and faith to share
God's blessings with others.
