Outer Banks Post Cards From The Past
The Sand Dunes

Jockey's Ridge is the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. Its height varies from 110 feet to 140 feet, depending upon weather conditions. Although it was privately owned until 1975, the Ridge has nearly always been treated as common property. Mariners have used it as an aid to navigation and visitors have used it as a landmark, meeting place, and site for hang gliding activities. Jockey's Ridge has been a North Carolina State Park since 1975. It is visited by over 500,000 people each year.
