Outer Banks Post Cards From The Past

The Annie L. Vansciver

The Annie L. Vansciver carried passengers and freight from Elizabeth City to Currituck during the week. On Sunday her "cargo" was delivered to M.G. Hollowell's wharf in Nags Head. She sailed from 1920 to around 1925 with Captain James Monroe Richardson at her helm for many of these years. Captain Johnson followed Captain Richardson for the last few years as the Annie L's skipper. We believe the Annie L. Vansciver was owned by the North River Line with offices in Elizabeth City, N.C. and Norfolk, VA.

In this collection of post cards notice the large number of passengers and the small rails running the length of the wharf. The rails were used to transport luggage and freight to and from shore.

We'd love to hear from any "old timers" out there who can pin point the exact location of M.G. Hollowell's wharf. We have heard it was located on the soundside behind Jockey's Ridge near Old Nags Head Cove.
