Lighthouse Society Notes: by Cheryl-Shelton Roberts
The ruins of this pre-Civil War lighthouse is all that remains of a
series of range lights that were built to guide ships 25 miles up the Cape
Fear River to Wilmington. Its history includes the days of the
blockade-runners with Confederate ships attempting to bring supplies past
the Union blockade to waiting troops. Located on private property, not
accessible to the public, it can be seen from the Southport-Bald Head
Island ferry.
