North Carolina's Lighthouses

Bodie Island Light

The National Park Service operates a visitors center in the old keepers house of Bodie Island Light. Bodie Island is still a working lighthouse with its original first order Fresnel lens, one of the few Fresnel lenses still operating in its original tower. The light station grounds are open year-round, however, until complete restoration is accomplished, the lighthouse itself is not accessible to the public.

Located south of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore entrance on US Hwy 12, the present Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of three that have stood vigil in this general area since 1847. Details on these three towers are below

For additional information, contact the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Route 1, Box 675, Manteo, NC 27954; (252) 473-2111.
