Cape Lookout may be reached from Harkers Island via private passenger-only ferries that run regularly except during winter.
The lighthouse was transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to the National Park Service, Cape Lookout National Seashore on June 14, 2003. The aero beacon light is still maintained by the USCG. The beaches and island are part of the National Seashore and are kept in their natural state.
