Aerial Photos of the breach between Frisco and Hatteras Village and the Corps of Engineers efforts to close it.
"Today I went for my seventh, and perhaps final flight over the breach site. The transformation, seeing cars driving across now, is amazing. Saturday was the first day allowing public traffic into Hatteras Village and beyond to the ferry terminal for the trip to Ocracoke. Life in those remote villages is now changing from what it's been for the past 2 months. Hatteras Village will be picking up their pieces for many months to come. These images show the ferry terminals at Ocracoke and Hatteras operating once again. Other 3 images are views of the new section of highway 12 spanning the breach area.
This flight took me beyond Cape Lookout from Billy Mitchell Airport in Frisco. I flew each flight with my good pilot friend, and Hatteras native Dwight Burrus of Burrus Flying Service."
" I went for my 6th flight this afternoon to see what was an opening on my previous flight several days ago. I had heard reports that the breach was completely closed on Saturday. Once I got airborne today, it was hard for me to distinguish exactly where the inlet was, until I could pinpoint the area by means of looking at the 2 islands that were formed on the soundside. The filled area looks very fragile from above. Visability today was about 30 miles, a wonderful way to view the coastline from 500 feet." Michael Halminski - November 4, 2003
"The gap has been filled across the first breach. It was the shallowest section. The deepest portion will be the last." Michael Halminski - October 23, 2003
"A slurry of sand is being pumped from the ferry channel near Hatteras Inlet with nearly 6 miles of 30 inch pipe. Bulldozers have begun moving the sand into the breach from the Hatteras Village side, and working their way across the breach." Michael Halminski - October 20, 2003
