The Cape Hatteras K-12 School Library Media Center is in the center of the interconnected buildings that make up the CHS campus. It is the hub for programs and projects spanning all grade levels and subject areas. At least 350 students, staff and community members use the Media Center each school day to access information, participate in classes and enjoy the print and electronic resources. A school-wide computer network provides access to the automated catalog of books and other media in the collection. CD-ROM reference tools are available at most computer workstations. These include general and specialized encyclopedia, periodical indexes and text, atlases, and other subject specific databases. Several computers are set up for graphic and multimedia design and presentation, and all workstations have access to the Internet. An Interactive Video Classroom enables students to attend classes taught at remote sites and to interact with other schools in various ways. This same room is the site for schoolwide broadcasts, such as the CHS News, produced by 3rd and 4th graders.

A word from Nancy Cowal, Media Coordinator--

Our small size faculty and student population make it possible for close, informal relationships. I can instruct and be a resource and a mentor at a very individualized level. The range of student ages means more kinds of teaching and more kinds of interactions. This is invigorating and challenging. It is also an advantage for guiding cross age projects. Here the Media Program can be a central part of the entire school program, like an interactive ecosystem. Hatteras Island, isolated and still much untouched, is a source of strength renewal for me. We all live very close to the natural elements. The entire community is in tune with the weather and the sea has a profound effect on our lives. For me, being able to walk the beach, or swim in the surf, or run through the maritime forest, is the most important part of existence. Opening up this world for some students, validating it for others, is an integral part of teaching here.
