Cape Hatteras Schools are located on one campus, on Hatteras Island, on Highway 12 in Buxton, North Carolina, adjacent to Pamlico Sound. We were a K-12 union school until 1997. Now Cape Hatteras Elementary School serves Kindergarten to fifth grade. Cape Hatteras Secondary School is for sixth through twelfth grade. The 2 divisions together serve 650 students. There are, for the most part, 2 classes of each grade level. There are just under 50 teachers, and additional staff brings that number to about 70. Because of our isolation and small size, many innovative programs have been developed. Some of these programs will be highlighted as these pages are updated.
