Earth Speaks 2010 at Roanoke Island Festival Park

Hurricane Felix 1995

This year the gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park in downtown Manteo is featuring the works of various artists' with the theme, Earth Speaks 2010: Art Gives Voice to Nature. Last Summer, Mary Ellen Riddle, the Museum Specialist at Roanoke Island Festival Park asked me to show some of my own work in their August exhibit, relating to weather and sky. She also invited two other Outer Banks photographers, Ray Matthews and Eve Turek to feature their work. The three of us are not new to photography. Collectively, we probably have a hundred years of shooting experience.

My very good friend, Ray Matthews has been a popular fine art and commercial photographer in Nags Head for decades. His work has been widely published and purchased by collectors.

Eve Turek began her work in the 70's as a photographer for a local newspaper, eventually branched off into the field of fine art photography and now owns and operates the Yellow House Gallery in Nags Head. She holds a degree in Environmental Education.

I have been shooting nature and wildlife, mainly on Hatteras Island for 37 years, and have made a living, running a gallery in my home that is open to the public. My images have also been published extensively.

Last Spring, I began working on my part of the show, editing through thousands of images. Ultimately, I picked enough for 18 different pieces, including one composite of 8 waterspout shots in one frame, depicting a single waterspout in different stages of development.

All of us print, mat and frame our own work, and the finished pieces displayed in the large gallery space depict three distinct styles of photography. The show began with an opening reception on August 1st that was attended by nearly 150 people. The exhibit ran through August 30.
