How to Apply for Jobs

Generally, you should contact the employer directly about the job opening. Each employer has provided contact information and application instructions as part of the listing on this site. If adequate contact information is missing or incorrect please contact us at info@eastcarolina.net.

Some employers may not provide detailed application instructions. The Outer Banks JobBank suggests that you follow these steps when applying:

  1. Create a professional cover letter and resume that describes both your interest in the job opening and why you would be a good fit for the position. You may not have a lot of work experience yet. Don't let that keep you from creating a resume that describes your job history, education, skills, interests and hobbies. Don't worry if you don't have a lot of work experience. Many employers are willing to train you for entry level positions.

  2. Don't forget to check your cover letter and resume for spelling and grammatical errors. There is nothing that will put you at the bottom of the list of applicants more quickly than a poorly constructed resume. If you don't have any experience writing resumes or cover letters, spend some time at the library, on-line or at a university career center.

  3. Send your cover letter and resume by email (unless the employer asks you not to). Don't use HTML or images within the body of your email. Not everyone uses a mail program that handles HTML yet. Put your short cover letter first and follow it with a text version of your resume. Before you send it to the employer send it to yourself. Then print it out and make sure it looks good when it is printed. If you use popular word processing programs to create your resume and cover letter, they will allow you to use bold text, bullets and different fonts. Attach separate copies of your cover letter and resume, in the format of your word processing program, to your email application. Indicate in your email that you have attached these versions, or use our on-line Resume Builder to create and e-mail a copy of your resume to a potential employer .

  4. To show that you are really serious about applying for the open position, send your resume and cover letter, on nice paper, to the employer by regular mail. The Internet is a great job searching and hiring tool, but many employers may receive thousands of email applications. Give yourself a leg up by sending the same application by regular mail. You can indicate in your mailed cover letter that you previously sent an email application.

  5. Keep track of all the job openings to which you applied. Keep a log of job listings and contact information along with the date on which you applied. Many employers will not respond to you unless you are a top candidate for the position. If you have made a valiant effort to apply for a job opening it is acceptable to follow-up with an email to see if you are a candidate for the job. When you contact the employer indicate when you applied and ask if they would like to set up a time for a phone-based interview or if they would like to email you any questions. Be persistent, but don't be a pest.

  6. Be aware that, though we try to keep only open positions in the JobBank database, in some cases positions are filled before we are instructed to remove them.

  7. If you are not a U.S. resident and do not have permission to work in the U.S. it is unlikely that you will be eligible to work in the U.S. The best chance to gain permission to work in the U.S., if you are not a resident, is to enter the yearly green-card lottery, or to attend a university here.

  8. Another popular option is to give permission to REGISTERED EMPLOYERS to review your resume' on-line. The information supplied to employers will NOT include contact information other than your e-mail address. It will not include your mailing address or phone number. If interested, a prospective employer may contact you by e-mail. To take advantage of this option, simply check the box provided on the first page of the Resume' Builder.
